Master Bedroom Reveal
Yes! The Master Bedroom—the headquarters, the secret lair, the baby-making palace…or something like that anyways. This room is OUR room, the place that we can escape to at all hours of the day. And while we don’t have kids, yet, to share our house with and inevitably hide from when we’re trying extra hard to keep our cool, the bedroom has always been a place that I tend to gravitate towards—mainly because the bedroom is this place that really sparks my creativity. I think it’s because my bedroom was the only room I was allowed to design while growing up. It’s my space that I can shape, color, design, and build to be my very own. And fun fact, I think I redecorated my room a total of 5 times before I was 18. And not just like, new sheets and pillows—no, no, no. I mean a head-to-toe furniture, paint colors, art, and decor MAKEOVER!
But here’s the kicker: adult Emery is all grown up now and has her own bills to pay, so adult Emery can’t make spontaneous decisions to change her room every three and a half years. And I also share this room with another person, (cue the husband). And he needs a space that encompasses him and his creativity too. And we also share this space with our 85lb furry love child, (cue the pooch). AND AND AND this master space is 225 square feet, and that’s including our shared closet. So in all honestly, out of all the spaces, this one was by far the hardest to design.
Regardless of the design setbacks and tough decisions I had (and still am) making with this space, it still has had quite the improvement, and I’m here to show it off. So here we go, another round of the before and after pictures:
What We Accomplished:
Starting with the most obvious one, we vaulted our ceilings. This just happened to come with a little bit of luck. I talked to my general contractor (GC) about this idea, but he said it would be VERY expensive. But on our first demo day, he popped his head up into our attic space and realized that the so called “beams” that should be supporting our roof were merely just nailed in, almost as an after thought when a previous owner added this space onto the house. The beams weren’t supporting anything, just decorating the attic space really. So we punched through the ceiling, pulled the “beams” off, and TA-DA: vaulted ceilings—the very lucky and inexpensive way.
We insulated the crap out of this room. And I should know since I did it all myself. Our bedroom is actually the coldest room in the house during the winter and hottest during the summer. This was mainly because our HVAC system was immensely incorrect, but our insulation was just terrible as well.
Which brings me to the next part, (I also mentioned this in our Kitchen Reveal), our HVAC system was updated with ALL the knobs, bells, and whistles. She sings like a canary, and keeps us extra comfortable throughout the year.
Also something I mentioned in our Living Room Reveal, we got new hardwoods added to the parts of the house that didn’t already have hardwoods, including our master bedroom. It was really weird having only one room on the lower level of the house with carpet. And I have NEVER been a fan of carpet, so I was very excited to see this go.
Like the rest of the house, this room got a new coat of Sherwin Williams Belgian White paint and Florescent White on the trim
I did a weekend DIY on our bi-fold closet doors that I was super excited about sharing, but then they were about 2 inches too big…of course. We had to shave these down and reinstalled them, but you can hardly tell.
And of course, my favorite part (well…an even tie with the ceilings), our accent vertical shiplap wall. Swoon! I really wanted this to go just about everywhere in our bedroom, but the one wall was VERY expensive and just not in the budget to do 3 more walls, plus our funky vaulted ceiling.
What’s Left:
A little bit of paint touch up. There’s a couple pieces of trim that were missed among the plethora of trim, crown, walls, and doors I had to paint myself.
The inside of our closet isn’t quite organized yet. I’m planning on showing this off once I feel confident enough to display it. I’m about half way there.
DECOR! So, I have to admit that a lot of the decor items in this space, you might recognize from other reveals: the faux olive tree from the living room, the chair from the dinning room. Hey, ya know what? Part of renovating a space is maintaining consistency…to a degree, anyways. The aesthetics are similar, which is good. But I’m still cracking the code on what exactly to put on our walls. I didn’t really have anything before, and now, I’m still baffled on what I want to look at first thing in the morning and the last thing at night. The one thing that I knew FOR SURE I wanted to look at was our wedding picture. So there we are, smack-dab in the middle of the wall like a piece of art in a gallery. I also still need some lamps and greenery to give it that luxuriously cozy sensation you feel from the photos. Good news is, there’s a lot to come with the space.
As always, I have a little mood board with all of our purchases on it. However, this one is rather empty. I’ll throw this one on here for now. And when I show off the room once it’s very much complete, I’ll do another mood board to gather all the decor insight. Also, I’d love to know what you think of the bedroom. Could you find yourself dreaming away through the night in this space? Let me know in the comments below.
I WANT THAT…
Bed: Wayfair (also, I’ve seen this bed on Crate & Barrel and Lulu & Georgia for $850, so this is a steal!)
Not Pictured:
Quilt: Wayfair (Bone Color)
Throw Pillow (Pink): Ikea (they don’t have specifically my pink one but this one is very similar)
As much as we love our master bedroom, it’s had a hard time keeping up with the demands for our routines and livelihood. I’ve been looking at a new vision for our room by implementing just a few changes to round out the final design for this space.
