DIY Thrifted Pillowcases turned Napkins
If you’ve been following me for a while now, you know that I love thrift shopping, and generally, how to style your home with a budget in mind. However, my favorite part of thrift shopping isn’t necessarily that you save money, although that is part of the reason. It’s that you never know what you’re going to find. It’s almost like a treasure hunt, and you never really know what you’re going to end up walking away with.
On one of my latest thrift-ventures, I found some pillowcases that had a beautiful floral pattern and color palette on them that inspired a DIY for my thrifted Easter table-scape project. I decided that the two standard-size pillowcases could easily be turned into four napkins.
This napkins are rather very simple to make too that I figured a blog post was in order to inspire others to reuse some cute pillowcases they might have lying around or on their own thrift-venture.
DIY Difficulty: Easy
Duration: 2 Hours
Supplies:
2 Standard Pillowcases
Iron (optional)
Scissors
Sewing Machine
Thread
Pins
Instructions:
Start by giving your pillowcases a good wash. Any fabric goods that I’ve thrifted always get tossed into the washing machine before they’re ever used.
Iron your pillowcases before the next step if they have a fair amount of wrinkles in them. (At this point, anything you do to one pillow case you’ll do to the other as well.)
Fold the pillowcase in half and cut it down the middle. We’ll refer to the piece that has the original opening as Piece A and the other piece that already has three sides hemmed as Piece B.
Take Piece A, and turn inside out. The side that has the cut you just made, pin it together and do a straight line 1/4” stitch.
Turn it right side out. The open end now should already be hemmed all the way around. I liked the idea of almost like an embroidered stitch showing on the right side of these napkins. So I pinned that opening together and picked out a fancier setting on my sewing machine. If you don’t have the option on your sewing machine, you could opt for the next best option your sewing machine’s settings have. Maybe a zig zag? Ultimately, you can decide if you want that extra detail or not on your napkins.
Take the opened cut end on Piece B, and fold the edge inward about 1/2”. This part can be a little tricky so take your time and pin it as you go. I’m trying to match the hemmed edge like Piece A without doing a double stitch.
Repeat step 5 on Piece B so all your edges on all 4 napkins are cohesive.
I would give them one more wash before using them for a meal, but then you’re done!
I absolutely love how they turned out! Like I said, this was one of those DIYs I wasn’t planning on doing until I stumbled on those pillowcases in the thrift store, and I’m so happy I did.
Stay tuned for the final reveal of my thrifted Easter table-scape next week with these napkins along with my many other thrifted/budget-friendly finds.
